ation for HBV-related HCC. Serum ESPL1 can be used as a biomarker for screening HBV-related HCC high-risk population and monitoring recurrence.Increased production and use of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) in the last decades has led to increased environmental release of these NPs with potential detrimental effects on both the environment and public health. Information is scarce in the literature on the cytotoxic effect of co-exposure to many NPs as this concern is relatively recent. Thus, in this study, we hypothesized scenarios of cell’s co-exposure to two kinds of NPs, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), to assess the potential cytotoxicity of exposure to NPs combination. Cytotoxicity of SPIONs, SLNs, and their 11 mixture (MIX) in six tumor and six non-tumor cell lines was investigated. The mechanisms underlining the induced cytotoxicity were studied through cell cycle analysis, detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and alterations in mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨM). Double staining with acridine orange and ethidium bromide was also used to confirm cell morphology alterations. The results showed that SPIONs induced low cytotoxicity compared to SLNs. However, the mixture of SPIONs and SLNs showed synergistic, antagonistic, and additive effects based on distinct tests such as viability assay, ROS generation, ΔΨM, and DNA damage, depending on the cell line. Apoptosis triggered by ROS and disturbances in ΔΨM are the most probable related mechanisms of action. As was postulated, there is possible cytotoxic interaction between the two kinds of NPs.Hookworm infection is a neglected parasitic disease. Direct wet mount is the usual method for the diagnosis of hookworm in Ethiopia, but its sensitivity is unsatisfactory. A cross-sectional study was therefore conducted from January to February 2018 among 192 study participants in Debre Elias district. Stool samples were processed by three methods the prevalence of hookworm was 77.6%, 68.2% and 49.0% by Kato-Katz, formol ether sedimentation technique and direct wet mount, respectively. Direct wet mount had relatively low sensitivity (61.4%) compared to formol ether sedimentation technique (85.6%) and Kato-Katz (97.4%). The latter two compared well with the gold standard method with kappa values of κ = 0.94, κ = 0.71 and κ = 0.39, respectively, and are therefore recommended over against the direct wet mount technique in detecting hookworm.Evidence of the health system challenges to promoting respectful maternity care (RMC) is limited in Ethiopia and globally. This study investigated the health system constraints to RMC in three Southern Ethiopian hospitals. We conducted a qualitative study (7 focus group discussions (FGDs) with providers of RMC and 12 in-depth interviews with focal persons and managers) before and after the implementation of an RMC intervention. We positioned childbirth services within the health system and applied complex adaptive system theory to analyse the opportunities and constraints to the promotion of RMC. Both system «hardware» and «software» factors influencing the promotion of RMC were identified, and their interaction was complex. The «hardware» factors included bed availability, infrastructure and supplies, financing, and health workforce. «Software» factors encompassed service providers’ mindset, staff motivation, and awareness of RMC. Interactions between these factors included privacy breaches for women when birth companions were admitted in labour rooms. Delayed reimbursement following the introduction of fee-exemption for maternity services resulted in depleted revenues, supply shortages, and ultimately disrespectful behaviour among providers. Other financial constraints, including the insufficient and delayed release of funds, also led to complex interactions with the motivation of staff and the availability of workforce and supplies, resulting in poor adherence to RMC guidance. Interventions aimed at improving only behavioural components fall short of mitigating the mistreatment of women. System-wide interventions are required to address the complex interactions that constraint RMC.Acid mine drainage (AMD) is the major effluent generated from metal and coal mines, causing serious ecological risks and degradation of aquatic habitats and surrounding soil quality. Biochemical passive reactors (BPRs) are an option for improving AMD affected water. This study investigates the effect of the size and concentration of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) on the efficiency of batch BPRs during AMD remediation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were also used as complementary techniques for the investigation of the changes in microbial cells and nZVI properties after the AMD remediation. Telaglenastat inhibitor The results from the batch experiment showed that the concentration of nZVI increases the pH and decreases ORP during AMD treatment, thus favouring the removal of metals. The results also suggest that metal sulfide precipitation occurred in all the batch with reactive mixture but was greater in reactors amended with nZVI of larger size. This study revealed that the presence of nZVI in the BPR leads to metal removal as well as the inhibition of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) activity. Microscopy study indicated that the addition of nZVI creates a morphological change on certain microorganisms in which the cellular membrane was fully covered with nZVI, inducing cell lysis process. These results show that nZVI is a promising reactive material for the treatment of AMD in BPR systems.
Left atrial volume index (LAVI) is a predictor of heart failure and adverse events, irrespective of left ventricular systolic function. The role of LAVI in the prediction of appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapies is currently unclear and was the focus of this study.
Consecutive heart failure patients with ischaemic (ICM) or idiopathic (DCM) aetiology receiving ICD for primary prevention were included. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of appropriate ICD therapies (ATs) shocks or antitachycardia pacing (ATP). Inappropriate ICD shocks were also assessed as secondary endpoint.
Among 198 included patients, severe left atrial dilatation (SLAE = LAVI ≥ 60 ml/m
) was present in 54 (27%). SLAE patients had a higher prevalence of NYHA class ≥ III, severe mitral regurgitation and atrial fibrillation history. During a median follow-up of 45 months (IQR 25-68), ATs occurred more frequently in SLAE group (33% vs. 15%,
= .007) as well as appropriate shocks (24% vs. 10%,
= .014).
